TALL CHORDS

The next step after seventh chords is to make your chords taller. They’re called “taller” because as you stack the chords on the music staff, they reach vertically higher on the page. Making taller chords is as simple as adding additional third intervals. Remember, chords are made up almost completely of third intervals. This is called “tertian” (based on three) harmony, and is the foundation of the western system of harmony.

Here is how the next group of chords stacks up. After seventh chords, there are:

Ninth chords (root, third, fifth, seventh, ninth)

Eleventh chords (root, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh)

Thirteenth chords (root, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh, thirteenth)
